Project-Based Learning

What is Project-Based Learning?
It is a teaching method in which students work in teams to gain knowledge and skills by working on an authentic, relevant, engaging real-life project, problem, or challenge.
Why is it Relevant to My Adult Learners?
Project-based learning taps into the key characteristics of adult learners. Adult learners are independent and self-directed, have a wealth of knowledge, are goal-driven, they want to learn practical information and skills. They are motivated to learn by internal factors. Project-based learning supports these key characteristics of adult learners, especially those working in the food service/nutrition field. It is a perfect model for teaching adult learners about food service and nutrition-related topics. It provides authentic learning opportunities that are relevant, provides immediate application, and addresses real-life issues. Project-based learning also teaches critical thinking skills, which are important in the food service and nutrition professions.
