How to Use Humor

Know your adult learners to determine what is appropriate, non-offensive humor. Strive to make humor course-related and to illustrate a concept taught. Never use humor to belittle, mock, ridicule, denigrate any person or group of people. Humor used in an educational setting should not be negative, aggressive, sarcastic, hostile, or promote stereotypes. Laugh with people (which includes), not at them (which excludes). A little humor goes a long way. Use it thoughtfully. There are many ways to incorporate positive humor without you having to be the center of attention. For example, use cartoons, quotes, videos, television sitcom clips, movie clips, and games to add humor and fun when teaching adult learners. When introducing yourself, share a humorous story about your profession, family life to set the "tone" for your training. Practice telling your humorous story before going "live" with real training. I have a couple of funny stories that I regularly use when training that I know will always bring a smile and laughter when I share them.
